Infrequent AI Users require a solution that enables them to establish context effortlessly when engaging with AI bots because the lack of contextual awareness often leads to unproductive conversational experiences. However, they face the challenge of manually providing extensive background information or repeatedly clarifying their intent, which obstructs the possibility of having a natural, seamless interaction with AI bots.

The objectives of this AI bot integration focus on simplifying user interaction within the legal domain, enhancing AI adoption through three key strategies:

Seamless Context Establishment:&nbsp;Streamline the process for users to input contextual information, reducing the need for manual entry and repetitive clarifications, and promoting natural conversation flow.

Persona-Based Interactions:&nbsp;Introduce a feature that allows users to select personas, like Senior Advocates or Law Professors, tailoring the AI’s responses to offer expert insights and relevant advice.

Comprehensive Legal Assistance and Continuous Improvement:&nbsp;Equip the AI bot to handle a variety of legal tasks and incorporate a feedback system to continuously adapt and refine its capabilities based on user interactions.

These measures aim to transform how users under-exposed to tech can interact with AI, significantly boosting their efficiency and overall experience.

Design a simple, user-friendly interface suitable for those with little AI experience, reducing obstacles to usage and growth.

To continuously feed relevant real-time data into the LLM, enabling the AI chatbot to maintain accuracy and meet user expectations by aligning with the evolving legal landscape.

To avoid complex animations and transitions, optimizing development resources and streamlining the implementation process, due to limited team capacity.

To incorporate a comprehensive and meticulously curated legal knowledge database, including terminology, regulations, case laws, and expert interpretations, ensuring accuracy and reliability (handled by the client).

The final design of the Just Bare-acts AI chatbot focuses on simplicity and functionality, targeting infrequent AI users. It facilitates easy context setting for smoother interactions with the AI, informed by research to meet user expectations and enhance usability. The design features the readable and neutral “Inter” font, and uses a purple-blue to blue-teal gradient on a light grey background for a visually appealing and highly accessible interface.

The interface consisted of three main components:

The chat interface aligns with established mental models, featuring a distinct image for each chatbot persona, automatically generated titles for improved context tracking, and message chunking for better readability. It utilizes the maximum width for optimal typing and editing. The layout is clean and intuitive, positioning AI responses on the left and user inputs on the right, mirroring traditional messaging apps for ease of use.

After selecting the desired persona, users can easily set the context for their conversation. This was achieved through a straightforward interface that prompted users to choose the relevant area of law (e.g., Civil Matters, Criminal Law, Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Law), and select their jurisdiction (nationality and state). By providing this contextual information upfront, users could ensure that the AI assistant had the necessary background knowledge to provide accurate and relevant responses.

By incorporating these design elements, best practices, and UX principles, the Just Bare-acts AI chatbot aims to bridge the gap between advanced AI technology and the legal domain, empowering users to harness the full potential of AI-driven legal assistance while overcoming potential barriers to adoption and engagement. The intuitive interface, contextual awareness, and adherence to established UX guidelines ensured a user-friendly experience tailored to the needs of infrequent AI users within the legal profession.

According to Accenture Legal Tech Report 2021, only about 15% of legal firms in India had implemented AI solutions as of 2021.NITI Aayog Report on AI for All, 2022 states that the adoption of AI in the Indian legal sector is still in its nascent stage, with only a handful of law firms and legal tech companies exploring AI-powered solutions.

According to the Deloitte Legal Tech Survey, 2022, the primary areas where AI has been adopted in the Indian legal sector include legal research, contract analysis, due diligence, and document management. However, the adoption of more complex tasks like legal reasoning and decision-making is still limited.

Deloitte Legal Tech Survey 2022 revealed that cost optimization and improving efficiency are the top drivers for adopting AI in the Indian legal industry.Accenture Legal Tech Report 2021 predicts that the adoption of AI in the Indian legal sector is expected to grow rapidly, with around 45% of legal firms planning to invest in AI and other emerging technologies by 2025.

EY Legal Sector AI Adoption Report, 2021 suggests that the high cost of implementing AI solutions, particularly for smaller law firms and solo practitioners, is a significant barrier to adoption. The report recommends the Indian government to consider incentives and support programs to encourage AI adoption in the legal sector.

NITI Aayog Report on AI for All, 2022 highlights the Indian government’s push for digitization and promoting emerging technologies like AI, presenting a significant opportunity for the legal sector. Initiatives such as the National AI Strategy and the AI for All program aim to encourage AI adoption across various sectors, including the legal domain.

User Demographics:&nbsp;The respondents comprised a diverse group of advocates (63.3%), law students (33.3%), and teaching professionals (3.3%), representing various experience levels, from less than a year to over 10 years in the legal field.

Focus on Simplicity: Given the moderate level of tech exposure and preference for ease of use, the interface is designed to be straightforward, minimizing complexity and leveraging familiar UI conventions.

Tailored Content Delivery: The discovered frequent use of legal bare acts implies a need for quick, accurate, and easily navigable legal information. The AI is enabled with specific data sets to be capable of handling specific legal queries efficiently.

Continued Engagement: The research reveals that respondents are interested in the app’s AI features indicating the importance of AI penetration in the legal domain.

AI Integration and Chatbot Acceptance:

While only 30% of respondents had previously used AI-powered tools for legal purposes, the majority (66.7%) believed that AI could have a significant impact on simplifying legal processes.

Respondents were generally comfortable (53.3%) or somewhat comfortable (26.7%) with the idea of interacting with an AI chatbot for legal queries.

However, concerns were raised about ethical and privacy issues related to AI use in the legal domain, with 43.3% of respondents expressing concerns.

Preferences for AI Chatbot vs. Senior Advice:&nbsp;There was a divide in opinion regarding the preference for an AI chatbot or seeking advice from a senior professional. While 43.3% preferred to seek advice from seniors, 33.3% were open to relying on a reliable AI chatbot, and 23.3% were unsure.

Trust in AI-Generated Interpretations:&nbsp;Respondents’ trust levels in AI-generated interpretations of legal acts and judgments varied, with an average rating of around 5 on a scale of 10, indicating moderate trust.

In conclusion, the primary research provides valuable insights into the target users’ needs and preferences, guiding the design and functionality of the Just Bare-acts AI chatbot to ensure it meets the specific requirements of Indian lawyers and law students effectively.

Currently, the competition in the legal sector for AI chatbots is limited, with only a few major players. Among them, lawbotpro.com and lawfyi.io are considered the first movers in the industry. However, these existing solutions lack proper product design and user experience considerations, presenting an opportunity for a well-designed and user-friendly AI chatbot like Just Bare-acts.

While general AI chatbots can provide basic legal information, research conducted by the American Bar Association in 2022 revealed that only 27% of legal professionals considered them trustworthy for legal research and advice, highlighting their lack of reliability in this domain.

Moreover, even these general AI bots do not specifically allow users to easily set context, which is crucial for accurate and relevant responses in the legal field. Enabling users to establish context can be challenging for general AI bots, but specialized AI solutions like a legal AI chatbot can seamlessly incorporate this functionality coupled with domain-specific knowledge.

By combining contextual understanding capabilities and a robust legal database base, specialized AI chatbots like Just Bare-acts can provide reliable and trustworthy legal assistance, successfully addressing a significant market opportunity.

How the design addressed Arjun’s Needs:

Seamless Context Establishment: Arjun can quickly set the context for his queries by selecting his specialization area, enabling the AI to provide tailored information instantly.

Advanced Legal Research Capabilities: With the chatbot’s deep understanding of legal terminologies and case laws, Arjun receives accurate and relevant responses to complex queries.

Senior Advocate Persona: Reflecting his seniority and expertise, this persona provides peer-like support and ensures that the chatbot’s responses are detailed and authoritative, matching his level of understanding and expectations.

Intuitive Interface and Voice Command: The straightforward design and the option to use voice commands align with Riya’s tech-savvy nature, making her interaction with the app smooth and engaging.

Comprehensive Legal Database: The AI chatbot’s integration with a meticulously curated legal knowledge base, including case laws, expert interpretations, and terminology, addresses Riya’s need for reliable and comprehensive legal information.

Context Setting Interface: The ability to easily set the context, such as the area of law and jurisdiction, ensures that Riya receives accurate and relevant information tailored to her specific needs.

To comprehensively understand the target users’ needs, pain points, and preferences, I organized the findings into an affinity map. This visual tool helped identify common themes and patterns, that enabled us to make informed design decisions for the Just Bare-acts AI chatbot.

Kunal Shah’s Delta 4 theory suggests that for a product to be successful, it must move people and their behavior from point A to point B in the most efficient way possible, unlocking three key elements:

Irreversible Behavior Change: The Just Bare-acts AI chatbot has the potential to drive an irreversible behavior change within the legal community. Once users experience the convenience, accuracy, and efficiency of the chatbot, it becomes unlikely that they will revert to traditional methods of legal research and information gathering.

High Willingness to Continue Usage: Just Bare-acts AI chatbot has a user-friendly interface, context-aware responses, and continuous learning capabilities to ensure a seamless and evolving experience, reducing the likelihood of users abandoning the app.

Unique Brag-worthy Proposition (UBP): The Just Bare-acts AI chatbot offers a unique and brag-worthy proposition by combining advanced AI capabilities with a user-centric design tailored specifically for the legal community. Users can brag about the app’s ability to provide authoritative legal guidance, streamline research processes, and offer persona-based interactions, mimicking consultations with legal professionals.

Conclusion of Delta 4 Analysis:&nbsp;Just Bare-acts AI Chatbot appears to significantly surpass the current practices exemplified by platforms like&nbsp;<a href="http://lawfyi.io/" target="_blank">Lawfyi.io</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://lawbotpro.com/" target="_blank">Lawbotpro.com</a>, aligning well with Kunal Shah’s Delta 4 theory. Simplifying AI for 2.5M+ Legal Professionals

In my role at Blockting, I have been instrumental in designing Grade Capital, a standout product in the Web3 and finance space. This project demanded innovative design solutions, as it involved setting benchmarks in an industry with few precedents.

In this project, I focused on enhancing MyCaptain’s LMS user experience and interface, specifically redesigning the sections most frequently used by students. The aim was to make the LMS more engaging and user-friendly.

MyCaptain, based in Bengaluru, India, has been a key player in online learning since 2013, hosting over 1 million learners and 4,50,000 learning hours. The platform targets 50,000 yearly enrollments and Rs 100 crore in bookings by 2025–26, bolstered by a recent Rs 14 crore funding round.

Disclaimer: This case study, based on independent research, seeks to provide external insights on possible improvements without critiquing the original designers or using internal data.

Identifying and addressing UI/UX challenges is crucial in creating an engaging and effective Learning Management System. Through a heuristic evaluation of MyCaptain’s LMS, several areas for enhancement were found, mainly focusing on the dashboard and course content viewer.

Problems with the Existing Course Content Viewer Screen

The redesign is driven by targeted goals that address both the business’s needs and the users’ experiential demands. These goals serve as guiding principles, shaping the direction and priorities of the redesign process.

The final design outcomes for the MyCaptain LMS project are a meticulous upgrade of the original platform, focusing on an enhanced user experience, increased accessibility, and a contemporary aesthetic that aligns with modern design standards. Each screen has been carefully considered to ensure improvements and new features are intuitive and supportive of the learner’s journey.

The redesign of MyCaptain’s LMS was tested using Maze with a pool of 25 participants and has positively impacted several key performance indicators critical for assessing the redesign's success.

The addition of a “Discussion Forum,” “Key Takeaways,” and “Additional Learning” sections has increased user engagement by 60% among test users. A prominently placed “Resume Class” button also helps users quickly resume their learning, enhancing usability and engagement.

An estimated 56% increase in course completion rates has been achieved through redesigned course content layout and progress tracking, which provide clearer pathways and a more habit-forming interface, reducing cognitive overload.

An estimated 80% decrease in support ticket count has been achieved through improved UX writing, enhanced visibility of system status, and more accessible navigation. These changes enable students to find answers independently and reduce the need for assistance.

A robust design system and major UI improvements have resulted in a consistent, delightful user experience, with 100% of test users reporting increased satisfaction with the redesigned LMS.

The detailed improvements made in the redesign of MyCaptain’s LMS, from the more engaging dashboard to the enhanced content viewer screen, are strategically aimed at impacting the platform’s KPIs favorably. While these outcomes are hypothetical given the project’s nature, they are grounded in strong research &amp; user-centered design principles and are likely to result in tangible improvements.

This projection underscores the importance of a design that is not just visually appealing, but also functionally resonant with the end-users’ needs, driving both business value and educational impact for MyCaptain.

Working on MyCaptain LMS’s redesign has been like going back to school for a crash course in design basics. It’s been a journey full of challenges and learning, and I’ve grown a ton. Here’s a reflective look:

Initially, I thought design was all about sticking to the plan. Turns out, not so much. When I first sketched out the user flows and wireframes, I was sure they were perfect, but I quickly learned that being too stiff can actually squash good ideas. I learned to let the design breathe, to evolve as I received feedback.

I had some ideas about what users like Ava and David might want. But boy, was there more to it! I’d add something like the “Resume Class” button and imagine Ava jumping right back into her creative process without skipping a beat, and David efficiently squeezing a lesson into his busy day. But then I’d start to second-guess — would a vibrant progress bar excite Ava or overwhelm her? Would David find the new search function intuitive or just another complexity? It was a reminder that in design, you’re not just solving puzzles — you’re anticipating real human reactions.

The Surprising Complexities of Simplicity

Everyone says, “Keep it simple, but significant” but wow, making things simple is actually super complex. Every time I wanted to cut something out for the sake of minimalism, I had to think really hard — was I making things clearer or just hiding important stuff? Trying to simplify without losing meaning was a huge challenge.

At first, making the platform accessible felt like just another task. But then, as I worked on redesigning the Content Viewer Screen and saw how something as simple as transcripts could open doors for students with different needs, it became a passion. Accessibility went from being a checkmark on my list to a core part of how I approach design.

The redesign of MyCaptain’s LMS retains its original layout to ease user transition while incorporating minor changes that respect its brand identity and improve usability. These adjustments follow best practices in educational psychology and user experience, ensuring that enhancements integrate seamlessly into existing user behaviors and expectations. This approach enhances user satisfaction without overwhelming them with new navigational challenges. Although the interface wasn’t built it was tested with Maze and the improvements suggest solid grounds for significantly better user engagement and learning effectiveness.

To tailor the redesign of MyCaptain’s LMS to actual student needs, I deep dive into the existing behavioral and learning patterns of the users. By conducting interviews and gathering data, I built a solid foundation of user understanding. This process was crucial in identifying the key challenges that students face.

I focused on identifying the key. challenges faced by the students. In this process, I defined 2 user personas.

These personas reflect the breadth of MyCaptain’s student body and will serve as the cornerstone for the redesign, ensuring that the updated LMS meets their varied needs and enhances their learning journey.

After establishing the foundation in the design sprint, attention was turned to developing user flows. This involved mapping out the journey a student would take through the new LMS interface. Careful consideration was given to maintaining the existing flow with intuitive navigation while introducing improvements. The previous(existing) user flows served as a blueprint, guiding the design decisions to align with the intended user experience.

The next step was the creation of wireframes. This stage was pivotal for visualizing the conceptual ideas. A diverge-then-converge approach was adopted — initially exploring a broad range of possibilities before narrowing down to the most viable options. The wireframes provided a visual representation of the dashboard and other key interfaces, offering an early glimpse into how the redesigned elements would coalesce into a cohesive user experience. Here, particular emphasis was placed on clarity, usability, and maintaining a consistent design language that resonated with the MyCaptain brand.

Through this process, the MyCaptain LMS redesign was shaped not only by creative inspiration but also by a structured approach to user-centric design, ensuring that each step contributed to a more effective and engaging learning platform.

In hindsight, every challenge was a conversation with the design, each hardship a lesson in empathy. The redesign for MyCaptain was about crafting experiences that felt right for the learners. And in doing so, it crafted a bit more of the designer in me. This project is about my deeper understanding, a keener empathy, and my ever-growing curiosity for the human experience in the digital world.
